Southwest Soccer Club’s Historic "Flagship Team"
AN UPDATE
The "Flagship Team" of Southwest Soccer Club is now a memory, but its winning record will long be a part of the beginning of the Club’s history. This winning team began when Southwest Soccer Club’s Chairman and Founding member Ken Smith, coached and managed the original core team within the Temecula Soccer Club. The original team went on to attain premier status within the Presidio League. Became champions with undefeated season. The core team then merged with Fallbrook Fury, and eventually became the Southwest Soccer Club BU17 team, the “Flagship of Southwest Soccer Club,” with players from Temecula, Fallbrook, Vista, Escondido, Bonsall, Murrieta, Menifee and Moreno Valley.
From 1998 through 2002, the Southwest SC team was coached by Waad Hirmez and managed by John Blanche. In its 1999-2000 season, the boys competed in virtually every major tournament held in Southern California. The team won 8 tournament championships, including the California Gold Cup, Los Gauchos, Cerritos Memorial Cup, Pateadores, South Coast Invitational, NHB (Silver bracket), Pegasus and Surf Cups. The boys also took four second place trophies. During this season, while playing in 18 tournaments, the team amassed a 75-14-24 record.
In 1999 and 2000, the team attained great success in both Open and National Cup play, first earning a berth in the finals (winning 5 matches) of the Reebok Open Cup, before dropping a close game 3-2 to FRAM Forest. In the 2000 National Cup competition, SWSC eliminated FRAM Forest in bracket play. One year later, in the Snickers National Cup, after a win over NHB, SWSC reached the semi-final round of play by defeating the 1999 National State Cup Champions, Surf White, in a shoot-out. In the semi-final round, however, the LBU Warriors edged out SWSC by a 1-0 score.
In the 2000-2001 season, the boys played in the Coast Soccer League. Taking first place in the Surf Gold - Cup Division, the League Championship in the CSL BU17 Gold Division, as well as the CSL League Cup Championship, highlighted this season. These accomplishments won the boys a berth in the CSL Premiere Division for the 2001-2002 season. They held an incredible record of 123 wins – 21 losses.
The team and Club suffered a tremendous loss when their manager and a parent, John Blanche, was killed tragically in an automobile accident. Southwest Soccer Club’s home, The John Blanche Memorial Soccer Complex, was named as a tribute to John’s invaluable contribution to the founding and developing of Southwest SC and his love of “The Game.”
