Southwest Boys Travel to England
After fundraising for a year the payoff was well worth it for a combination of players from Southwest Soccer Club. Boys ages 14-17 have returned from their tour in England August 8th. Their 13-day adventure began on July 26 leaving the Temecula area for LAX temperatures hitting 102+. Anticipation was high most had not been out of the country and one boy had never flown before. They were visiting what the English call “The Birth Place of Soccer’ the North East of England. Their guide for this trip was none other than Pete Gregory, a true native of the “North East” and soccer fanatic/coach for the club. After a 19 hour journey the group finally found themselves in 54 degree temperature light rain and settling in at the Middlesbrough sporting inn and lodge for the night. Some much needed sleep followed and the boys were off the next day to play a game against a local team, Yarm FC, at the Middlesbrough training grounds. Soccer has never looked so good. The group had many games playing some of the top youth talent from area clubs including Doncaster, Darlington, Stockton, Seaton Carew and others. Rain seemed to follow the boys every time they hit the field..and not just a drizzle but downpour. Spirits remained high the boys were in a part of the country that doesn’t get to see many Americans especially American youth football teams. The boys were also treated to a variety of games. They watched Hartlepool (pronounced hartleypool) play Newcastle with an opportunity to be hosted in the club house and appear on field at halftime other games included Middlesbrough vs. Atletico Madrid but I would have to say the highlight game was Sheffield United vs. Leicester City being one of 18,000 plus passionate football fans is something that the boys will never forget that along with a trip to “Old Trafford” home of Man U. gave them lots to absorb. There were many other activities of culture and entertainment on the trip but too many to tell about. My suggestion is that when you see one of these “mates” you ask them about their journey!
