Santa Barbara Cup Tournament Champs

Coach Rodolfo Velazquez's SWSC Boy's Under-11 Blue team won the Santa Barbara Cup Tournament on Sunday, August 21, 2005. The team went undefeated in pool-A play scoring 19 goals and not allowing any of the other teams into their net. Their defense was greatly supported by an unrelenting offensive that gave opportunity for eight different SWSC boys to score goals. Their opponent in the championship game was SLO Fire from pool-B play. SLO Fire also came to the finals undefeated, scoring shutouts in each of their previous three games.

The first half of the championship game was dominated by defense and a couple of missed scoring opportunities by SWSC's offense. Two penalties against SWSC in the box and a line violation created three penalty kick opportunities for SLO Fire. SWSC Blue goalie Jake Howard came up huge by blocking two of the three PKs attempted. Down by a score of 1-0 at half time, SWSC came out offensively strong and aggressive in the second half. Conner Burns scored on a high arcing chip shot to even the score at 1-1. Following a foul by SLO Fire, Diego Sanchez lined a free kick into the left upper corner of the net to give SWSC a 2-1 advantage. SWSC played aggressive defense to control the ball and game, including a couple of clutch saves by goalie Jake Howard, to preserve the victory.
