Second in a series, we take a look at some of the local heroes of SWSC from the boy’s teams.
Timberland and Fishy over the last few years have dedicated their playing days with SWSC. Two players who have not always seen the glamour of playing at the top level but find themselves playing in peak form. Both players have the bones to build on.
1. What do you like best about SWSC?
Timberland: What I like best about Southwest would have to be the coaches. They have helped me develop as a player and as a person. You can ask anyone, and they would say I had the worst temper around, and now thanks to Colby and other coaches I have it under control.
Fishy: The best thing that I like about the club is the opportunities they give us to succeed.
2. What was your best game last season?
Timberland: It would have to be in State Cup. I can’t remember who we played but we won 2-0 and I scored both goals and they were nice if I must say so myself!
Turner: When I played against a team in a tournament and they won 1-0. I frustrated the other team by stopping so many of there shots. I received the MVP award for that tournament
Fishy: My best game last season was against Knott’s Forest. I scored 2 goals in the first half then we got a red card and we ended up winning 2-1.
3. What was your best game this season?
Timberland: We played FC Heat and I scored 2 goals, we won 4-0 or something like that.
Fishy: My best game this season was against FC Lightning when we tied them 1-1 and my team played very well together.
4. Your best goal?
Timberland: This is a hard one, I would have to say during State Cup a free kick from the 18, I bent it with the outside of my foot upper left.
Fishy: My best goal was in the Encinitas Rotary Cup when I took the ball from the kickoff and dribbled the team and scored to tie the game back up.
5. You have had a spell working with the younger players in the club, have you enjoyed it?
Timberland: Yes I enjoy helping the younger kids because I like to think that I have made them at least a little better by playing with them.
Fishy: I like playing with the younger players because it gives you a chance to help them get better and lets you share your experiences with them.
6. What have you learned from all your experiences of working hard to get to where you are today?
Timberland: I have learned that working hard pays out in the end, and to never give up.
Fishy: That when you work hard to get something it feels good. Most of my hard work goes in at practice to get better.
7. Who is the best player you have played with & and what older player from the club would you like to play like?
Timberland: The best player I think I have played with would be Mickey from England, and I’m on the oldest team in the club so I’d like to think maybe the little ones would like to be like me.
Fishy: The best player I have ever played with is John Baross when he was here from England.
8. What is the best thing to happen in your short career so far?
Timberland: SHORT!? I wouldn’t call my career short. I feel like an old man sometimes but I would have to say now my team is in 1st place in Boys U19 AAA.
Fishy: The best thing I have done has been going to England and the experience of seeing how soccer is played somewhere else and this improved my play
9. What advise can you give to the younger players in the club that sometimes find them selves at the lower end of the table?
Timberland: I have been there many times myself and just work hard and to always try your best.
Fishy: When this happens don't get discouraged just fight harder and win the games that you need to stay in your division
