Yanks invade UK...and they can play football too!

By: Helena Albright

SWSC sent a total of 30 players to England this year. Their goal was to play some amazing football and experience the country where there is a passion for the game unlike any other.

This year there were two groups of young men who ventured to the UK. The boys are ages 12-16 and play for various SWSC teams along with a couple of guests from other clubs. The first group being the older of the two had some remarkable games against local teams from the Northeast. They had success in many of those games and came in as a “finalist” in one of the local tournaments held at the Seaton Carew grounds.

The younger team had success as well in many of their games and claimed the “Champions” prize at their tournament held at Seaton Carew grounds as well. Both groups traveled to professional grounds for tours, Manchester United and Newcastle United, and were able to see several professional friendly games.

The England experience for the boys is unlike any other. Not only is their entire trip filled with football but they are learning some great life skills. For many, this was their first time traveling outside of the U.S. Included in the tour were visits to the historic town of York, Alnwick Castle (the site of Harry Potter films), Forbidden Corner and trips to water parks and bowling. One of the boy’s favorite stops would be to “Sports World” a store that basically carries nothing but soccer gear at remarkable discount prices. It was here that the majority spent their money purchasing new boots.

Now that everyone is safe at home and hopefully well rested we can watch and see some of the benefits of their trip carried over to their games here in the U.S.

Until the next planned adventure ~ Cheers!
